Solar Rebates

Federal Scheme Rebates (STCs)

Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) are part of a federal scheme administered by the Clean Energy Regulator to make solar installations more affordable. Essentially, STCs act like a financial incentive that installers will factor in as an upfront discount on the cost of your system. The exact value of STCs changes based on market supply and demand and can vary significantly depending on your system size and location.

The amount of STCs applied to your system is proportional to the size of the system you buy,  so if you opt for a larger system, you’ll earn more STCs and therefore receive a bigger discount. The scheme is gradually being phased out by 2030—which means installing sooner typically results in a higher benefit. Generally, you do not need to apply directly for STCs because accredited installers handle the paperwork on your behalf. However, it’s always wise to verify how STCs are applied to your quote so you know exactly how much you’re saving.

Solar Victoria Rebates

In Victoria, households may be eligible for additional financial support through the Solar Victoria Program. This includes a $1,400 rebate designed to lower the upfront purchase price of a solar system, along with a matching $1,400 interest-free loan.

Both of these are subject to certain requirements: your combined household income should be under $210,000, the property must be valued at under $3 million, and you must live in the property you own (owner-occupier). You can choose a repayment schedule of up to four years for the loan, making it easier to manage ongoing costs. For the latest information on eligibility, application steps, and any program updates, visit the Solar Victoria website.
