Solar Inverters

How Do Solar Inverters Work?

Solar inverters are a key component of a solar power system. It is essentially the central hub that takes power from either solar panels or a solar battery and sends it out to your home to provide power. It does this by converting the direct current (DC) electricity sent to it by solar panels and/or a battery into alternating current (AC) electricity. AC electricity is what is used by virtually all homes, appliances, and electrical systems.

Solar inverters optimize energy output by adjusting the panels performance to maximize efficiency under changing conditions. They also monitor system performance, providing data on energy production and usage, and ensure safety by disconnecting the system from the grid during outages to prevent backfeeding. Any excess AC electricity can be stored in batteries for later use or exported to the grid.

What Should I Consider When Choosing a Solar Inverter?

Choosing the right solar inverter starts with matching it to your solar panel design and layout. For systems with a simple layout – panels grouped together with minimal shading – a string inverter is often the most cost-effective choice. If your setup is more complex, with panels positioned across multiple orientations/angles of pitch, or where system will be affected by shade to a significant degree, a microinverter system can provide better energy optimization.

Another important consideration is whether you plan to add solar batteries in the near or distant future, as this can influence the type of inverter that best suits your needs. If you’re considering installing a battery within the next 0–2 years, opting for a battery-ready DC-coupled inverter can help minimize future costs when you’re ready to make the upgrade (check out our battery page for more details).

For those planning to add a battery further down the track, sticking with a string inverter now and pairing it with an AC-coupled battery solution later is typically the best way to go. This approach keeps things simple and cost-effective while leaving room for future upgrades.

The next key factor is finding the right balance between brand, quality, and price. At Brightworks Solar, we offer a range of mid to upper-tier products, allowing us to tailor solutions to suit your energy needs and budget. Whether you’re looking for an affordable option or a premium, long-lasting system, we’ll guide you in finding the perfect match for your solar setup—both now and into the future.
